I am THIS Close to Disabling Anonymous Comments on All Blogs

You may notice that there are a bunch of deleted comments on the NCNCA CX News blog. That is because, apparently, some of you need censoring.

In general, I am all for allowing anonymous comments, because it allows you to post comments while maintaining your privacy and security - and in general it works very well. But there are a few bad eggs out there - and you know who you are - that hide behind "anonymous" to post crap that you wouldn't otherwise say to any of your fellow community members.

Don't get me wrong, I love discourse, dissenting opinions, and we want to hear them and allow you to contribute without fear of retribution. But if you can't handle the responsibility, you will lose it. I don't have time to police these blogs continuously - so if censoring lewd, homophobic, racist, and/or otherwise offensive comments starts to become a daily thing, I'll disable your ability to do so - and we'll all lose out.

BTW, a big THANK YOU to all of the folks that contribute intelligent and constructive comments to our blogs - both anonymously or otherwise. You keep our site lively, entertaining, and informative...

why do people take comments so personally,
just settle down and dont worry about it.
I work for the U.S. Gov., and people just need to not take things so personally, please.

USA Cycling likes a open format when blogs are representing their races and their racers and members. Please just do not take things so personal Funke.
I speak for USA Cycling members from all over the United States of America, there is benifit to having open forums. If you delete some things, then you must delete everything everyone writes. As anything can offend anyone at any time. Please let all people, of all walks of life, comment on their thoughts.

We need the annonymous comments- because most of us are too insecure to attach our thoughts to ourselves. Those of us not insecure are just too damn perfect and therfore above identity.

Surely you can see our conundrum!

...I'm probably falling for flame-bait but what the hell...

"USA Cycling likes a open format when blogs are representing their races"

Huh? Where are these blogs? You're joking, perhaps???

"There is benefit to having open forums".

Amen.

"If you delete some things, then you must delete everything everyone writes."

Why?

Please explain to me why removing offensive posts is somehow violating some anonymous person's civil rights. Dave and I have a very high tolerance for what content goes on the site, and this is only the 2nd time in 4 years that we had to resort to removing comments, and this only after a number of complaints were received.

BTW there was nothing for me to take personally from the posts.

Grey
you are such a anonymous individual that your comments are only for anonymous readers.

if people want to voice certain things with out putting a name or a color, as you do both, then that is their right.

Everyone does not have to agree with Tom S. that is their choice.

Tom S. does not have to agree with everyone as well. That is his choice.

We all sometimes dress up in dresses and race our bikes, so who is anyone to point fingers at anyone.

I commend Dave and John for having a cool site to read stuff and get some info or some good laughs, and i get good laughs when I read your too serious scribblings!

Each day in downtown S.F. I see seriously bad things going on, yet when I go to this site I get some fun things to read, and some good info.

Thanks

also anyone can register for a blog name and make up a name and then can pretend to be anyone they choose, which is worse then writing anonymous posts, so go think about that Grey, or Gray, or ???

Everyone is anonymous in their own special way.

Why are we talking about this B.S. when we should be commenting on how much fun we had at Psyco CX!

I tried talking about all the homosapiens and homoerectus racers, but got in trouble for writing about Homo's.

people need to not be so stuffy and self rightous.

Everyone is different, just look at all the gay(happy) costumes at the Halloweenie race, and this shows how all folks see things a little differently.
But those of you who want censorship, I think have a skeleton costume in their closet that they want to keep hiding :(

Grey,

I appreciate your point of view, but I think there is a place for anonymous comments. First of all, there is convenience - you shouldn't have to register for every different flavor of blog - blogspot, wordpress, etc - just to leave a comment. More importantly, I think a lot of people have important things to say, but for various reasons would like to maintain their privacy, these comments would otherwise go unread.

I think our community is grown-up enough to handle the responsibility - we'll see, though. Like I said, this is only the 2nd time we've had to remove comments so in general I think it works.

Is there any way to block specific IP addresses from posting? I may be wrong but the majority of inappropriate comments seem to be coming from one or two people. I am just going off of their poor sentence structure and repetition of certain phrases.
Most cyclocrossers are funny creative people. That is what makes me think these innapropriate comments are coming from one or two morons out there.
Its actually pretty funny picturing some guy posting the same thing over and over trying to make it seem like its coming from several different people.
And yes I do see the irony of posting this annonymously.

Thanks for the suggestion.

There appear to be some roundabout ways of finding and blocking an IP in Blogger - I'm currently not annoyed enough to take the time to do it, but I may look into in the future if abuse continues.

Yes I too believe much of the abuse is coming from the same individual, and I'm hoping that person will soon locate the key to unlock the closet they are trapped in...

i agree
i think all the posts are coming from one person
especially the funny ones
but i do not think it is a guy
i think it is a girl doing the poor posting
just my take on the ordeal

or it could be some moron who is pretending to be a girl
