UCI Issues CX Apparel Rules

This just in:

Following the recent debate about cyclocross equipment, the UCI has clarified international rules for cyclocross uniforms.

After virulent debate the UCI uniform committee has outlawed all non-standard apparel, including black socks, sleeveless jerseys, and of course any form of female skirts or dresses.

The genesis of this new regulation is the recognition that technological advances have distorted the purity of sport. The "originalist" movement traces its roots to the UCI decision to revert to 1972 bicycle technology for all future hour record attempts.

An important part of the enforcement program for the new CX apparel regulations is for cyclists to inform the community of violations among their fellow riders. So, blog commentators: Do your duty and call out fashion mistakes in our ranks (hopefully with pictures)

So can I still have the one knee high sock to keep my thugish style and thus "keep it real"? Or is this another mechanism for the man to keep me down?

I'd like to see everyone race naked! That would lighten the mood for those folks who say that there is only one way to do things! The proper way!!! Lets strip them down and make them race in their birthday suits! YEAH! Those folks that are bike nazi's probably never even get naked! After all this is 2006 and not 1966 or 76 or 86 or 96, so if you are current with the trends and rules you know that getting naked is not for the 2006 crowd.

See what happens when u get too many roadies in the mix! Naw, okay I'll be fair. Since Cx is emerging from its cult status and is being pushed into the mainstream, the Eurocentric UCI hoity-toities want to homogenize, corpor-tize, and new world odor-ize it to make it palatable to big multinational sponsors. So yes, this definitely smells of ..."the man" keeping cross' fun n funky origins down.

The upside, mo money, mo money. Downside, loss of soul and true identity.

So I say, let's enjoy the non-UCI races, lots of 'em out there and have yo freak on in full effect, (cross dress, Mel in her skort, Larry in his sleeveless, and me in my pink lingerie...HAYYYY!).

Also, maybe UCI needs a good old shake up. I say lets plot sedition by having a strong contingent at the UCI races in full non-sanctioned kit gear. If you know you aren't going to place, (hey stop lookin at me), then what the heck, see what you can get away with. Blend into the crowd at the start, and maybe some bold folks can make some display of a statement during the race: did someone say Lucha Libre mask and jock strap costume change?

Anyway, it seems as if the inevitable departure between racing for fun vs. for points/$/career/team has finally made its appearance with this ruling.

So whatcha gonna do?

I agree with proper cross apparel for cross races! Just like proper cross bikes for cross races! The surf city series should be respected. It should be raced on proper cross bikes and there should be no crazy outfits. The surf city series, like the cccx series. and the pilarcitos series, should be respected and raced with proper cycling clothes. End of story! If you do a bike race where proper bike race clothes!

I must confirm my agreement with the previous post. If I do a bike race, I wear proper bike race clothes. If I go to work I wear my work clothes. If I go to dinner I wear my dinner clothes. When I sleep I wear my sleeping outfit. If I go to the beach I wear my speedo swim trunks. And you guessed it, if I do a cross race I wear UCI official race attire. End of Story!

I'm glad so many people refuse to wear outrageous clothes - at $5 a pop, you make the DFL BBQ possible.

Steve here,

i am going to wear a thong! under my race shorts! This is the new millennium and so not the 80's or 90's and if you watch all the modern TV programs you will see that wearing a thong is the way to do it! every one does it now and when i do a bike race i wear a thong! End of story! It feels good on the dismount and mounting portions of the race. And it actually makes you run faster. Come on everyone get in the new millennium!
